What Love Ought to be...

The other morning I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I was being a total grumpster for no reason. I showered then went to grab my favorite Trader Joe's pop tarts and be on my way to work. Well it just so happened that my husband had eaten the last packet of pop tarts, which infuriated me. He knows I only eat a few select things for breakfast on school days...why would he eat MY poptarts? (Told you I was being a grumpster) So out comes my inner princess and I start to stomp around and pout to show him that I was not happy with his decision. #imaroundkidstoomuch My husband should have just slapped me and said they are OUR pop tarts not yours, but God bless his heart, he didn't. Instead he insisted on making me a granola yogurt concoction to-go. I didn't DESERVE his kindness or compassion. I was being selfish, I was choosing to make something so small a big deal yet he chose to love me unconditionally and actually return my extreme moodiness with kindness. What?!

That is what love ought to be...loving each other despite our flaws and going out of our way to make others feel special even when they absolutely do not deserve it. That is how Christ loves us and how I want to love others. Thanks sweet husband for showing me love in the smallest of ways each day.

Ought To Be-Audrey Assad
"I love you more than a slow falling summer rain
Or in the silence that only the snow leaves behind
I love you more

And I love you better than the gray of the autumn air
Better than the spring in it's blooming against the sky
I love you more

It may not be red as a rose is yet
It may not be strong as the old oak trees
But love planted deeply becomes what it ought to be

Your love is steady and sure as a mountain's high
Moving my heart like a river that gently bends
Your love is sure

Your love is wide open spaces where I can run
And yet we're tangled up roots in the warm broken earth

Yeah our love is sure

And it may not be clear as a morning yet
It may not be wide as a restless sea
But love given freely becomes what it ought to be

And it may not be clear as a morning yet
It may not be wide as a restless sea
And it may not be red as a rose is yet
It may not be strong as the old oak trees
But love planted deeply becomes what it ought to and
Hearts given freely become what they ought to and
Love planted deeply becomes what it ought to be
What it ought to be"

I had no idea Trader Joe's made poptarts (and I am in there all the time!). Now I am going to have to look for them... You have such a kind husband! It is hard to stay mad when someone else is being kind.

You are so right...my husband seems to do these kind things for me all the time--it's making me realize that I need to make sure I'm showing him the same sort of love and patience as well. However, I can see why you would be annoyed with the poptarts...I hate when i'm envisioning what I want to eat and then to discover it is gone. :)

Thanks so much for sharing something like this. I feel that way so much. I'm kind of a little brat sometimes. Jordan does a great job showing me how to love.

ughh...my husband always does these sorts of things too. Too dang sweet. It's clear that you still learned from it though, which is awesome. Thanks for sharing your experience! It will push and encourage others!!!

This is SO true!!! I tend to be the one throwing the temper tantrums and my husband does those little things to and it shuts me up. :) He tends to sulk, so I'm the one to do the little things then! It's a two way street, for sure.

Love this! Despite our flaws--so true. I'm always falling short, but when we give love out of grace instead of deeds, it's a beautiful thing.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Your burlap buntings on Etsy are so cute :)

I love this. There are times when I'm sure Michael is frustrated with me or vise versa, but it's stopping ourselves and finding the answer together that makes relationships so amazing! :) Hope you are doing wonderful pretty lady!

I love this so much...mainly because I am the same way when it comes to my breakfast (and every kind of) food. Grumpster or not :-) You two really do have true love...because love is patient and oh so kind. Thank you for sharing this!

You're so right about this being what love really looks like. There have been some people in my life that really hurt me and I realized that I struggled to love them. So my prayer when I would interact with them was that I would always love them unconditionally like Jesus loves me. So not based on whether or not they are nice to me and not based on whether or not I think they deserve it... but love them because as a Christian I am called to love others. I'm not saying that I always have succeeded at this, haha, but it definitely helps me keep things in perspective when I think about how Christ loves us unconditionally.

So true! Your husband sounds like my husband. Kevin is so much a better person than me. He laps be in betterness really.
