That one time when I backed the car into the garage door...

So you know how you hear about people doing things like locking their keys in the car for the 100th time, running out of gas on the highway or backing their car into their own garage door and you think wow that would never happen to me! Well one of those things happened to me a few weeks ago. I was just going to skip over this post because it's not my finest hour, but then I thought just maybe this post would make someone else feel a little less stupid about doing something like this so here you go... It was my spring break and I was so excited to meet my friends for lunch and have a craft day that I was only half paying attention as I was pulling my new car out of the garage and I backed right into the half way up garage door! All I heard was a loud crash and I looked back to see my rear window completely shattered. I really couldn't believe what I had just done. I was a hot mess as you can probably gather from my red face and puffy eyes in the picture below.
So I called my friend Stephanie crying and she said they were bringing the party (including her 1 month old) to get me. We had lunch (and dessert because it was much needed) at this adorable cafe in my downtown square and for a while I forgot all about my little garage door mishap. My husband got home from work and was so gracious. I hated that I made more work for him after a long day at work, but he forgave me and let me boo hoo to him. I shop vac-ed the glass and boo hoo-ed some more because now we come to find out the garage door may need to be replaced too. Enter my handy father in law who works with Drew for 2 hours to fix the garage door. I am upstairs (still crying) when my mother in law walks in with flowers for me. I do a mindless, stupid thing and she brings me flowers? My in-laws are amazing.

Lessons learned from this:
1.) Don't judge people when they do "stupid" things because it could happen to you
2.) Compassion gets you everywhere
3.) I have the sweetest friends and family in the world.

Please tell me you've done something stupid like this. If you have, leave it in the comments so I feel better about myself. Haha.

Oh no! Hope it's all better now. I would be crying too! I hate it when things like that happen. Plus I don't have handy family members to bail me out :) Guess I should just appreciate that my darn 1950s garage is too small to actually fit a car in... ha.

I hate it when I do things like that (which I do often!). About 3 weeks after we got our new car I scraped the side against the garage. Whoopsies! BTW...how awesome that your inlaws got you flowers! So nice.

Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! I would be a mess if that happened to me. Your husband is so sweet. I've done some stupid stuff before. One time in high school I backed my parents' suburban into a light post. And the best part was, there was NO ONE ELSE in the whole parking lot. Literally I was the only car and I hit the only light post. My dad was not happy with the huge dent in the bumper. ha!

You poor thing! But hey, sounds like you have some amazing family & you got some beautiful flowers out of it! Woohoo!

Oh my goodness, that stinks, but luckily your friends and husband are awesome! I do "stupid stuff" like this ALL the time. I have been locked out of places (my car, my apartment) more times than I care to admit and I have even run out of gas a few times... oops. You are right - compassion and a good atitude (and the ability to laugh at yourself!) are key! Glad you were able to have a fun lunch (with dessert!) and a craft day despite the window incident!

i've never backed a car into a garage door before (mainly because we've never had garages!) BUT i did run into a pole during a basketball game in front a gymnastium full of people (WHO puts the gym doors so close to the out-of-bounds line anyway?!?! and i still hold a grudge against the people who were standing in the doorway who moved out of the way thereby exposing the pole in the center of the doorway instead of trying to catch me!). i wanted to pretend that i was dead but i figured that would just make it worse ;)

I did this EXACT thing a few years ago. It was about 3/4 of the way up and LUCKLY it didn't shatter my windshield, but it did leave a pretty hefty scratch on the top of my car and some damage to the garage door. My hubs did a little handy work of his own and it seemed to work fine after that - but man, did I feel stupid. It happens to the best of us. :)

Ohhhhhhh, yes. I've done MANY stupid things like this!! Sometimes, bad luck just happens. I busted out my entire back window by mowing. MOWING. I ran over a rock, it shot out the side, and perfectly shattered my car window.

These things just happen sometimes:)

It can happen to all of us! But it sounds like you had great friends who were able to really turn it into a much better situation. Good for you!

Oh my goodness, I would have been a crying mess too. Poor girl!!! :( I'm SO SO glad you have amazing friends and family to help ease the crappiness of it all! I have a story to share with you from this weekend ;)

Oh you poor thing! That's one surefire way to ruin a whole day :( BUT this might help - I've done the exact same thing!! I was a senior in high school and and we'd been having some issues with a short in my garage door. Hadn't had it repaired yet, so I was used to having to check to make sure it was all the way up. Well, one morning I just totally forgot. Garage door went from halfway up to all the away bent out away from the house! Awful, awful morning for sure, so I feel your pain. But you're so lucky to have wonderful people in your life to turn those bad days right around!

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry that happened to you! I once scraped the side of someone's car when parking and didn't even realize it until I saw the mark on the side of my car once at a different location down the street. I thankfully managed to get back to the mall right as she was getting to her car. Someone had left a note on her car with my plate saying, "This is the info for the person who hit and ran." I felt terrible. I didn't "run" on purpose. Thank God I managed to see her so we could exchange insurance info.

Oh girl! That's so rough! I'm glad that everyone was so sweet to you about it. That's how Christopher and I both deal with things like that. Once it has happened, being angry about it won't change anything. So yeah, I'm glad that you have such wonderful friends, husband and inlaws! :)

so far, i have not done anything like this, but i wouldn't put it past me! however, when i was around 12, my family was coming back from a kayaking trip and my dad pulled into the garage forgetting that the kayaks were on top of the car. major garage damage. oopsies. we laugh about it now :)

I love the part of the story where your in laws and friends help you feel better. Scott and I almost burned down my parent's garage (and potentially their neighbors house) last summer by leaving linseed oil rags in a pile on the linseed oil container. Long story short, spontaneous combustion is a real thing! Luckily the rags burned out on top of the container instead of exploding it! Oh and one time in high school I crashed into a mercedes and got out of my truck without putting it in park and it rolled down the hill into my old piano teacher's rose garden! I had to replant every.single. rose. I could go on...there's so many embarrassing things I've done! Hope everything works out and this just ends up being a funny embarrassing story for you, too.

Your garage door is probably one of those items. You expect it to go up and down when you need it to go up and down, but if it doesn't, it can be more than an inconvenience, it can be dangerous.
