Dear 2017 {A Year in Review}

Dear 2017,
Where did you go? I swear I blinked and then you were over. Despite how quickly you seemed to go, you were a year full of some very special things, the best being the addition of Alder to our family. Last year at this time I was very pregnant and very hormonal about the changes happening to our family. I was so nervous about how bringing a new baby home would affect Aiden and the relationship we had. I remember very vividly crying as we left for the hospital because I knew things were changing forever for our family and I was worried. Well here I sit a year later propped up in bed, soft music in the background as my husband has graciously given me a few minutes to myself. I can hear my boys laughing together in the family room, cars vrooming on the hardwood floor and I wonder how I ever doubted that Aiden wouldn't be anything but ecstatic about having a brother. Hands down my favorite thing about 2017 has been watching my boys learn to love each other.

I remember being absolutely terrified about leaving the house with two kids by myself. And now I can snap two kids into carseats and load and unload groceries like a pro and with confidence, but it was a process. That has been my 2017. Learning to embrace my fears and just go for it.

This philosophy of mine carried over as I started a new role at work shortly after Alder was born. I went from 40 hours a week to 15 and I am so thankful to be a mostly stay at home mom, but also have a job that I love. But with every change I face, I was scared I wouldn't be good enough for this job. My coworkers are amazing and have encouraged me and supported me in my new role and sitting here a year later seeing the progress that has happened makes me so thankful. God is so faithful, friends.

With two kids, Drew and I have had to learn a lot about balance, about giving one another grace, about patience and about sacrifice. Having two kids has flipped our world upside down, but in the best way, but we still have a lot of learning to do about raising boys while also cultivating our marriage at the same time (especially since 9 months out of this year we were sleep deprived.) We have managed to go on more dates in December than almost the entire year combined, but we hope to be better about date night in 2018. One of my favorite things we started to give us more "adult time" was a suggestion by my friend Andrea. A few nights a month we feed the kids dinner and then put them to bed and then fix ourselves a nice cheese board and some wine, start a fire in the basement and call it date night in. It has been so fun to try new wines and cheeses and have more "us" time.

I have failed at being crafty, blogging consistently or hosting fun parties this year, but I did manage to keep two kids alive, potty train a toddler, work part time and still appear to be thriving so that's my big win of 2017. I did manage to throw Aiden a pretty cute Hundred Acre Wood party and pull off some amazing Halloween costumes though. Aiden also started showing a love for cooking so we have had fun cooking some recipes together and that is something I plan to continue in the new year!

So here's a look back at some of my favorite posts, events, recipes and discoveries of this past year...

Favorite posts:
It's no surprise that my favorite posts are once again centered around motherhood, but more specifically about the transition from one to two kids. It has been hard. It has been sweet. It has been a blessing. It has been a process.

Favorite events:
I did a horrible job documenting events this year. I never posted about my girls (and babies trip) to Michigan in July (which was absolutely amazing to be with my college friends on the brim of being out of college for 10 years (HOW?!). I never posted about meeting my new nephew for the first time or hosting my sister in law's baby shower (it was adorable and he is adorable, trust me). We didn't take any vacations or do anything big, but we did a lot of small family adventures and explored some new places together

Michigan girl's (and babies) trip
We explored a lot of zoos this year! (Columbus, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville)
We met our new nephew and found out we are getting another niece of nephew in June!
We Knocked off a ton of things on our Fall Bucketlist
First Thanksgiving in Kentucky with Alder where we stayed with my whole family at an AirBNB
Continued Aiden's Advent and had fun with our Christmas Bucketlist

Favorite recipes:
I also failed at documenting any recipes here on my blog this year mainly because cooking was harder to prioritize this year (we ate more McDonalds than I ever imagined we would) but that doesn't mean I didn't make some amazing meals along the way. Aiden got a chef outfit for Christmas and has been my little buddy in the kitchen. Our favorite things to cook together have been my Mom's sugar cookies and Taco Pie. Here are a few of my favorite healthier recipes that I tried this year (July was a good health month for me). And as always, Pioneer Woman remains my favorite and I'm excited to try new recipes from her Come and Get It cookbook this year!

Favorite discoveries:
I always like thinking back about some of my favorite finds of the year...things I'm not sure how I didn't know about before, but am glad to know about now.

The Crown on Netflix (So good!)
Silicone Bibs (why did I not ever use these with Aiden, WHY?!)
Polar Express Train Ride
Free Open Gyms at our Community Rec Center

I am so very thankful for what I learned this last year and I'm thankful for the people I get to do life with everyday. Cheers to a great 2017 and an even greater 2018! Happy New Year friends! Thank you for sticking around!

My word to live by for 2016

2015 was a year filled with many tragic events in our world and I found myself becoming fearful. I found myself worrying about all the "what if's".

After I read about Amanda Blackburn, I feared someone breaking in to my house, I feared being without Aiden and him being without me.

After the tragic death of one of my friend's husband, I began to fear losing my own husband. When he wouldn't answer my calls, fear would creep in.

With all the terrorist attacks, small fears began to grow in my mind when we were out in public places. What if someone came into the movie theater we were in like I've read about in the news? I found myself seeking out exits and wanting to go to the shooting range with my husband.

I had nights where I couldn't fall asleep because of the knot growing in my stomach due to fear. And then I was reminded that this is not how God wants any of us to live our lives. God does not want us to live in fear.

There is so much we can fear in this life. The list of "what if's" could go on for days. Fear can paralyze you, can cause you to miss out on the future God has for you. But we do not have to live in fear.

"We need to learn to accept the reality of His love for us, so that our fears do not control us."
-Joyce Meyer

If we choose to trust God and His perfect love for us, we have nothing to fear because perfect love casts out fear. We are His beloved children and He has good plans for us. Does that mean tragedy can't strike? No. Does that mean that there won't be trials? No. What it does mean is that we have a good father who loves us and will take care of us. We have a father who has prepared a place for us even beyond the edges of this Earth. He is here to grieve with us because He has walked in our shoes. He has felt pain and loss and He cares about us.

So this year I want to have more courage.

I want to be a brave mother and entrust a sense of adventure and zest for life in my son. I want to do what I know in my heart is best for my son and not let doubt or fear creep in and tell me I'm doing this whole mom thing wrong.

I want to be a brave wife and encourage my husband to go out and take hold of his dreams. I want to embrace every second we have together and go out on more dates just the two of us.

I want to be a brave woman. Someone who can walk out of the house without make up on and not worry what others think of me.

I want to have courage with the words I say to my friends and family, especially those who don't have a relationship with Jesus.

I don't want to be afraid to try new things for fear of failure or not measuring up.

I don't want to worry about the things that are beyond my control. Like cars breaking down, appliances breaking, basements flooding or the money it takes to fix those things.

I am the daughter of a King and He will take care of me. I just need to choose to walk with Him and  choose to have courage.

Do you have a word for 2016?
What do you hope to do differently this year?

My word for 2015 was DWELL
My word for 2014 was HOPE
My word for 2013 was THANKFUL

Dear 2015

Dear 2015,

So much has happened during our time together. You were full of many of Aiden's "firsts" so you will always be memorable for our little family!  I have watched my sweet, dependent little baby grow and change into an adorable little boy who loves life! It has been a joy to watch.

I had to come to terms with the fact that my blog was going to lack in creativity big time. Instead of creating pretty things and cooking lots of new recipes from my Pinterest boards, I was busy creating memories.  I'm proud that I was able to document all 12 months of Aiden, while also making his baby food myself and finish up a few projects in his room. We went on our first family vacation and had fun showing our little guy all the places we love around our city.

You taught me to be flexible and to choose to keep smiling through the crazy. I've learned to not sweat the small stuff. So instead of being upset that my son is covered in oatmeal from head to toe because he wants so desperately to feed himself, I laugh. Instead of being frustrated that my house is now Aiden's jungle gym, I choose to smile because I won't always find toy cars in my shoes. One day I will wish for this so I'm not going to wish it all away.

You were full of more changes and some heartbreak, but you helped remind me to rely on God for everything.  He is in control and He is good. That's all I need to know.

Here's a look back at some of my favorite projects, events, recipes and discoveries in 2015...

As I sit here reflecting on all that happened this year, I want to burst. My cup is literally overflowing with thankfulness. Thank you for another full year of blessings that are too numerous to count. I can't wait to see all that 2016 has up it's sleeve!

Dear 2014

Dear 2014,
During your reign, I experienced one of the best days of my life along with one of the hardest. Aiden was born in 2014 so you will always be a memorable and truly amazing year, but you are also the year that we lost Drew's dad to his battle with cancer. We miss him every single day.

This year has been full of changes. We are brand new parents and both Drew and I got brand new jobs! We are so thankful for jobs we love despite the process of getting them being absolutely crazy! We also started going to a new church and found an amazing small group.

It was hard for me to find time and energy to do many projects or cook a lot of new recipes, but I was able to document my pregnancy with weekly bump pictures and letters to Aiden. I was also a bridesmaid in one of my best friends weddings as well as my sister in law's. My greatest accomplishment and the thing I am most proud of in 2014 is being a mom!

Here's a look at some of my favorite projects, events, recipes and discoveries of 2014...

Dear 2013

Dear 2013,
I've made some incredible new memories and experienced so much joy during your reign. We grew closer as a couple, Drew got a new job, we made some fun updates to our house, took a trip out to Colorado and felt blessed in so many ways by others. But you also held heart ache and threw us a few curve balls. I have had to rely on God more than ever before and my goal of being thankful in all circumstances was more important than I ever imagined it would be. Despite the ups and downs you brought, I always like to end the year reflecting on some of my very favorite things. Below are some of my favorite projects, recipes, moments and discoveries of 2013!
